Neeraj Chopra Withdraws

Olympic and world champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has opted out of this Sunday’s Paris Diamond League event due to an adductor niggle that has been troubling him for several months. Chopra, who led the field at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland, last month with a throw of 85.97 meters, explained that he has learned to prioritize his health over fulfilling commitments, a wisdom he gained after winning his Olympic gold.

Health Comes First for Chopra

NEW DELHI: Olympic and world champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has decided to withdraw from the upcoming Paris Diamond League, citing a persistent adductor niggle as the reason. In a recent interview with ‘ESPN,’ Chopra mentioned that he is currently focused on training and strengthening his blocking leg to alleviate the strain on his groin.

“I need to strengthen my blocking leg when I throw because that’s when my groin gets pulled. We’re working on that to see how we can reduce the impact on the groin and control the pressure on it,” Chopra told PTI. He also mentioned his plans to consult with “different doctors” after the Paris Games to further address the issue.

A Shift in Priorities

Chopra, who led the field at the Paavo Nurmi Games with a remarkable throw, emphasized that he has become wiser over the years. He no longer puts himself at risk just to fulfill competition commitments. “Back then, if I had an entry in a competition, I would definitely go and compete no matter what happened. But now with more experience, I am better placed to make correct decisions,” he said.

Focus on Full Fitness

Reflecting on his recent performances and future plans, Chopra noted, “I was happy with my performance in Turku, but I felt there was more work to do. I was slow on the runway compared to my normal speed. I want that speed back, and for that, I need proper confidence that I am fully fit and that my groin is fit. I want to feel confident when I run on the runway.”

Chopra’s cautious approach stems from his understanding of the crucial block phase in javelin throwing, where the pace generated by the run-up is transferred to the hip and then to the throwing arm before the javelin is launched. Ensuring that his blocking leg is strong and his groin is not strained is vital for his performance and long-term health.

Looking Ahead

Although Chopra acknowledges that he could have competed in more events, he has realized the importance of prioritizing his health. “I could have competed in more events for sure and that was the plan. But I have realized that my health is paramount, that comes first. Even if I feel the slightest discomfort or like I am pushing myself too much in training, I’ve learned to pause for a bit,” he added.

Chopra’s mature approach to his career demonstrates his commitment to maintaining peak physical condition while making strategic decisions about his participation in events. His wisdom and experience ensure that he remains a formidable presence in the world of javelin throwing, even as he takes necessary steps to safeguard his health.
