A recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shed light on a distressing incident involving an American family who fell ill after consuming bear meat at a gathering. The Minnesota Department of Health was alerted in 2022 when a 29-year-old man began experiencing severe symptoms, including fever, muscle soreness, and swelling around the eyes, prompting multiple hospitalizations within a short span.

Upon investigation, it was revealed that the individual had attended a family gathering in South Dakota, where a meal featuring kabobs made from black bear meat was served. The meat, sourced from northern Saskatchewan, had been stored in a freezer for a month and a half before being thawed out and initially served rare due to its darker color. Although family members noticed the undercooked taste and recooked it before serving again, nine individuals consumed the bear meat.

Unfortunately, the 29-year-old man fell severely ill and was hospitalized, where doctors diagnosed him with trichinellosis, a rare type of roundworm infection typically acquired from consuming wild animals. This parasite has the ability to traverse the body and even reach the brain, leading to potentially life-threatening complications.

Dr. Celine Gounder, speaking to CBS, elaborated on the symptoms of brain worm infection, which may include nausea, vomiting, headaches, and seizures. However, some individuals may remain asymptomatic. Dr. Gounder explained that the immune system typically encapsulates the parasites, forming hard, calcified structures to prevent their further spread in the body.

The CDC emphasizes the importance of cooking meat thoroughly to a temperature of at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure the elimination of parasites. Additionally, they caution against cross-contamination, as parasites can potentially spread to other foods.

Subsequently, five other family members, including a 12-year-old girl, were diagnosed with freeze-resistant worms and treated with albendazole, a medication that disrupts the worms’ ability to absorb energy, ultimately leading to their demise.
