Mumbai Metro Line 3 Nears Launch: Final Testing Phase Underway, First Phase Operational by Mid-August

Mumbai: In a significant development for Mumbai commuters, the long-awaited Metro Line 3 is entering its final testing phase, marking a crucial step towards its launch. The Research, Design & Standards Organisation (RDSO) will commence trials next week, a vital process before receiving the green light from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS). According to a report in the Hindustan Times, Metro Line 3 is expected to be operational by the end of July or mid-August.

Extensive Network and Critical Connectivity

Metro Line 3, a 33.5-kilometre north-south corridor, is designed to enhance connectivity across Mumbai. It will link six commercial suburbs, 30 office areas, 12 educational institutions, 11 major hospitals, 10 transport hubs, and both of Mumbai’s airports. This extensive network aims to significantly reduce travel time and alleviate traffic congestion in one of the world’s busiest cities.

Final Testing and Safety Approvals

A senior official revealed that the RDSO team has already initiated the inspection process on the Aarey to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) stretch. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) is concurrently securing additional clearances and safety certificates essential for smooth operations. The initial phase will cover the Aarey to BKC route, which will operate with nine rakes, each consisting of eight cars. Subsequently, a 9.63-kilometre extension from BKC to Acharya Atre Marg in Worli is nearing completion.

Project Details and Phases

The MMRC has begun installing the necessary equipment and instruments to conduct oscillation trials, which will evaluate the metro line’s performance. These trials are expected to last several days and will provide critical data for the next steps. Upon completion, the MMRC will apply for an official inspection by the CMRS.

The crossover at Acharya Atre Chowk will enable trains to reverse towards BKC. Importantly, the completion of the Girgaon and Kalbadevi stations is not required for the initial phase launch. Previous trials have successfully tested trains at speeds of 85-90 kmph.

Phased Rollout

The project, with an estimated cost of Rs 37,000 crore, will see Phase 1 operation between Aarey and BKC by the end of July or mid-August. Phases II and III, extending from BKC to Cuffe Parade, are slated to be operational by October. Phase one will include eight stations from Seepz to BKC, while phase two will cover six stations from Dharavi to Worli. The final phase will add 11 stations between Worli and Cuffe Parade.
