Rise in Cancer Cases Among Young Men: 21% of Patients Seek Second Opinion, Study Finds

A recent study has revealed a worrying trend: nearly 21% of cancer patients seeking a second opinion are men below the age of 40. Conducted by an NGO, Cancer Mukt Bharat Foundation, the study highlights a notable rise in cancer cases among younger demographics, particularly in men. The data was gathered from calls made to the NGO’s helpline, which offers free second opinions to cancer patients across India.

Increased Concern Among Young Men

The study found that a significant portion of the patients seeking a second opinion were men under 40, with the majority of calls originating from Hyderabad, followed by Meerut, Mumbai, and New Delhi. Between March 1 and May 15, the helpline received 1,368 calls, underscoring the growing concern among young cancer patients.

Prevalence of Head and Neck Cancers

Head and neck cancers were the most prevalent among the callers, accounting for 26% of cases. These were followed by gastrointestinal cancers (16%), breast cancers (15%), and blood cancers (9%). The findings indicate a need for targeted prevention and treatment strategies, particularly for cancers that can often be mitigated through lifestyle changes and early detection.

Demographic Insights

The study also revealed that 60% of the young cancer patients were men, highlighting a gender disparity in cancer prevalence and awareness. Additionally, 67% of the patients were receiving treatment from private hospitals, while 33% were being treated in government facilities. This split underscores the varied access to healthcare services in India.

Late Detection Remains a Challenge

Dr. Ashish Gupta, the principal investigator and senior oncologist leading the Cancer Mukt Bharat Campaign, emphasized the importance of early detection. “Unfortunately, as is representative of the population at large in India, nearly two-thirds of cancers were detected late, likely due to low adoption of proper screening,” he noted. The study found that only 27% of cases were diagnosed in stages 1 and 2, while a staggering 63% were identified in the more advanced stages 3 and 4.

Helpline as a Support System

Since its launch, the helpline number 93-555-20202 has become a crucial support system for cancer patients. It operates from 10 am to 5 pm, Monday to Saturday, offering free opinions from leading oncologists. Patients can discuss their treatment plans and check the availability of the latest medicines via phone or video call. This service aims to provide clarity and reassurance to patients navigating the complexities of cancer treatment.

Preventive Measures and Lifestyle Changes

Dr. Gupta highlighted the role of lifestyle in cancer prevention. “Head and neck cancer, for instance, is nearly entirely preventable by lifestyle modification, vaccinations, and screening strategies,” he said. He also pointed out the rising rates of obesity, changes in dietary habits, increased consumption of ultra-processed foods, and sedentary lifestyles as contributing factors to higher cancer rates in younger generations. He urged the adoption of healthy lifestyles and avoidance of tobacco and alcohol to mitigate cancer risks.

The Growing Cancer Burden in India

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), India reported more than 14 lakh new cancer cases and over 9 lakh deaths due to the disease in 2022. The Apollo Hospitals’ recent Health of the Nation 2024 report projects this number to rise to 15.7 lakh by 2025, positioning India as the “cancer capital of the world.”
