Negotiations for the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) have entered a crucial stage, with Indian negotiators making significant proposals aimed at facilitating trade between the two nations. According to two officials familiar with the negotiations, India has proposed allowing the import of Scotch whisky in both barrels and bottles, while also advocating for mobility and migration-related issues to be addressed.

The 14th and final round of discussions for the India-UK FTA commenced on January 10 and is currently underway. Indian officials are optimistic about reaching a favorable agreement, with hopes that positive commitments will emerge from the ongoing negotiations.

Since the initiation of negotiations, India and the UK have conducted 14 rounds of discussions, demonstrating a shared commitment to concluding the agreement expeditiously. A delegation of senior officials from the UK recently visited India to engage in discussions on the remaining aspects of the FTA negotiations.

In response to inquiries regarding the progress of negotiations, a spokesperson from the British High Commission stated, “The UK and India continue to work towards an ambitious trade deal.” Emphasizing the importance of a fair and balanced agreement, the spokesperson reiterated the commitment to reaching a deal that serves the best interests of both countries.

Regarding the specific issue of liquor import, one of the officials involved in the negotiations revealed, “The issue of liquor import is under consideration stage. We have proposed import of spirits in both bottles and barrels.” Additionally, there is hope that the terms of the FTA will address mobility and migration concerns in a manner favorable to both parties.

While many aspects of the proposed FTA have been finalized or are nearing completion, certain issues, particularly related to mobility, remain contentious. Indian negotiators are pushing for provisions that ensure full mobility for Indian businesses operating in the UK, highlighting the importance of facilitating cross-border trade and investment.

In terms of visa regulations, efforts are being made to relax restrictions and streamline the process for Indian service companies operating in the UK under FTA provisions. This initiative aims to facilitate easier recruitment of manpower by Indian firms and enhance bilateral cooperation in various sectors.
